Dear Kathryn

Welcome to June's Foresight Insights. It's a quick roundup of the latest news, events and publications from Third Sector Foresight, to help you get the most from being part of the network.

There's a shift in emphasis at the moment: politics offering some 'light relief' from economic considerations! With local and european elections taking place there's been a lot going on. Read on for more about how it may impact on your organisation.

We always like to know what you think of the newsletter, so please email your comments to kathryncook@ncvo-vol.org.uk.

What will the UK population be like in 5 years' time?

Hot off the press - the next in the popular Future Focus series. Changes to the UK population will impact all areas of your organisation. Future Focus 6 explores the opportunities and risks that key demographic drivers such as changes to family structures might present for your organisation in the future. It also offers tips and suggest ways to plan for how these changes might impact on you.

What's affecting you?

There are over 100 drivers on www.3s4.org.uk - which ones are you really feeling the impact of?

We want to hear from you which drivers you think are offering your organisation the biggest opportunity or presenting the biggest risk. The credit crunch is an obvious contender, but what about the localism agenda, in light of the recent political activity?

Each month we like to feature thoughts from one of our members on these questions. Have your moment in the limelight and let the rest of the network hear your views. Let us know!

Drivers

Drivers of the day

Here are some drivers which we think would be particularly relevant for you to think about at the moment:

The EU agenda - New driver

Conservative focus on social justice

Engagement in formal politics

International campaigns and movements

What do you think of the new drivers' page format?

Local and European elections - what do they mean for the VCS?

The question on everyone's lips, with the upheaval at both local and international levels.

These elections were a chance to shape the future local and European agenda, but have implications for the next general election as well.

What does it mean?
Natalie discussed what she thought the implications could be, and the most likely outcomes...

What happened?
...Sarah provides a handy one stop shop with information on what did actually happen and some though-provoking questions on what it all means...

A European slant
...with our resident European experts giving us the lowdown on the European outcomes.

Cooperation is better than conflict

Is there a growing trend in cooperation? NCVO's Stuart Etherington thinks that one element which will help an organisation 'weather the current economic crisis' is collaboration. Has your organisation been looking at this? Read more on Katharine's discussion of the growth of cooperation. Have a look as well at NCVO Collaborative Working's pages.

What is happening to legacies in the downturn?

Does your organisation rely on legacies? Do they form part of your funding strategy? If they do, this post provides some invaluable insight into how the recession is impacting on them. It also provides another thread to the thinking about giving more generally, and the recession. As society entered the recession, we featured some posts about giving. The report on legacies seems to suggest this tide is turning. What do you think? What experiences have you had with this?

The growth of social lending

In these tight times, there has been an increase in social lending. Is this going to continue to be a trend? How could your organisation interact with, or benefit from this? Have a look at Megan's post. This issue raises interesting questions around online technologies assisting in the development of less traditional social systems.

Sustainable Fundraising

Another discussion on money! Two of our members, Olof and Muriel discuss sustainable funding, focussing on child sponsorship. Is this something your organisation has experience of? How does sponsorship rank alongside other types of fund raising in your view? Read their conversation and add your experiences.
