Happy New Year from the Pathways through Participation team!

Every quarter this newsletter brings you all the latest news about the Pathways through Participation project. The main highlights of this issue of the newsletter are the publication of our literature review and the selection of our fieldwork areas. Both will inform and shape the next stages of the project.

Our literature review is now available online
The Pathways through Participation project looks at participation in a very broad way, and aims to cover a wide range of participatory activities that are often viewed in isolation. This broad approach to participation has informed our literature review, which brings together different bodies of literature on participation, including literature on community development, volunteering, public participation, social movements, everyday politics and ethical consumption. The review looks at the historical and current drivers of participation, the activities and actors of participation and different theoretical approaches that contribute to a better understanding of participation. It closes with our emerging ‘participation framework’ that we aim to further develop and refine in the subsequent stages of the project. Download the review.

A major milestone: the fieldwork areas have been selected
The three areas on which the research will focus are Leeds for the inner-city area, Enfield for the suburban area and Suffolk for the rural area. In each area we will be working with a broad range of stakeholders, and particularly with Voluntary Action Leeds, Enfield Voluntary Action and SAVO (Suffolk Association of Voluntary Organisations) who will be our key partners and will be responsible for chairing our local stakeholder groups.

News from the field
Each research officer in the team is leading the research in one of the three fieldwork areas: Ellie Brodie (NCVO) is carrying out the research in Enfield, Eddie Cowling (Involve) in Leeds and Nina Nissen (IVR) in Suffolk.

To better understand the areas and what participation looks like in each of them, all three researchers have been busy interviewing a number of key informants from a range of organisations and groups. With the help of our local partners and others, they are looking to select a smaller area at neighbourhood level in which to conduct the activity mapping sessions and in-depth interviews (for more information visit the approach and methods page on our website). A more detailed account of how Ellie, Eddie and Nina are getting on can be viewed on our website.

Our advisory group expands
Our advisory group, which met for the third time on 8 December, has three new members: Paula Jeffery from Enfield Voluntary Action, Richard Jackson from Voluntary Action Leeds and Jonathan Moore from SAVO, who are also chairing our local stakeholder groups in each area. A short biography for them is available on our website.
